Services

Basics

Services are mechanisms that can be used to exchange information between IEDs. Services themselves are abstractly defined in the IEC 61850-7-2. This abstract definition is called the abstract communication service interface (ACSI). In addition to that, IEC 61850 comes with mapping parts such as the mapping to MMS described in the IEC 61850-8-1. These mapping chapters describe how to implement a service with an existing communication stack.

The idea behind the ACSI is long term stability. With new communication stacks evolve in the future the IEC 61850 does not need to define new services, but “only“ new mapping chapters that maps existing services to the new communication stack.

With the very different requirements towards communication in a substation, there are many different services at hand. Most services fall in the category Client/Server services, the rest is GOOSE and Sampled Values (SMV).
