Welcome and introduction to the Digital Substation SIG

Introduction from Jos Zenner.

Adoption of Open Source for Digital Substation at Alliander

After a brief description of Alliander, Sander Jansen presented the main challenges Alliander is facing and how open source projects contribute to solve them.

Alliander is the largest DSO in Netherlands, operating gas and electricity.

The biggest challenge Alliander is facing is the congestion. They need to find relevant technical staff and scale the organization to build to meet the demand. Besides that, Alliander is looking into maximizing grid usage.

Alliander is a big user of open source and they are actively contributing on several projects especially within LFEnergy.

The company is currently researching a new generation of substation automation with the ability to include new functionality.
As flexibility and scalability are keys, software defined substation is seen as a solution with potential.

Alliander is currently working on an architecture made of several LFE projects such as LFE CoMPAS, FledgePower and SEAPATH.

On SEAPATH, Alliander is evaluating ABB SCC600SW. Lab setup is in progress.
On FledgePower, Alliander is monitoring the project.
The main contribution is linked to LFE CoMPAS. Lots of testing are currently on-going with major vendors like Siemens, ABB or Grid to Great. The plan is to integrate top-down engineering and add a FledgePower plugin.

Everyone is welcome to contribute to the relevant open source projects!

Update on FledgePower

v3.0 is going to be released in the coming weeks. A more detailed presentation will be provided during a coming SIG
